Menstruation is a vital aspect of an adolescent girl’s life.
The issue of poor menstruation hygiene is rarely acknowledged particularly in developing countries.
May 28th is celebrated as “Menstrual Hygiene Day”, dedicated to breaking cultural taboos and increasing awareness about the significance of appropriate menstrual hygiene management.

Healthy Practice During Menstruation
1. Use only clean menstrual products like sanitary pads, tampons, menstrual cups & period underwear.
2. Wash hands before and after using the restroom & after changing pads/ tampons or cups.
3.Change pad/ tampons/cups regularly depending on the flow
Pad | Change every 3-4 hours even if the flow is light | If the flow is heavy change more frequently |
Tampons | Change every 4-8 hours | Do not wear a single tampon > 8 hours |
Cup | wear up to 6-12 hours depending on the flow | Clean every day after use & sanitize after the period is over |
Period underwear | Can be Worn for 8-12 hours | If reusable rinse in cold water after each use to remove excess blood |
4. Clean and wash the outside of the vagina and bottom every day with water
5. Wear lightweight, breathable cotton underwear.
6. Properly discard pads, tampons, and cups. Wrap them with toilet paper, tissue, or other material and throw them in a dustbin. Do not flush menstrual products down the toilet.
7. Drink enough water to stay hydrated and prevent urine infections.
8.Eat a well-balanced diet.
Do’s
- Keep track of your periods
- Always wipe your vagina from front to back
- Use only water to clean vagina
- Take a warm shower
- Do light exercises, Yoga
Dont’s
- Do not use scented toilet paper, tampons, or pads
- Do not use Old CLOTHES napkin
- Do not wear tight synthetic undergarments
- Do not engage in unprotected sex
Menstruation is a natural process it does not make you Impure or Dirty!!!
